Recognition of prior learning (RPL) is when your previous studies and/or work experience are recognised and counted towards your degree as credit.
SIHE may recognise prior learning by granting specified credit or unspecified credit. Unspecified credit cannot be granted to core units.
You should be aware that accepting credit may:
For domestic students, credit may affect your study load, which can affect your eligibility for government assistance such as Youth Allowance, Austudy and Abstudy.
For international student visa holders, you need to consider student visa requirements and eligibility for future visas. If your expected course duration is decreased, we are required to notify the Department of Home Affairs.
Due to the complexity of the RPL application process, we can offer you general advice about applying, but we won’t be able to assess whether, and how, your prior learning will be recognised until you have formally applied.
Applicants seeking advice on the eligibility and nature of RPL are encouraged to contact SIHE at [email protected].
Prior learning is assessed by our admissions staff in conjunction with our program directors and academic staff.
Credit will be awarded based on equivalency of completed prior formal learning to one or more units within a qualification. Credit can be used to meet pre-requisite requirements in other units of study.
“Equivalency” will be defined as approximately 80% of topics, learning outcomes or assessment. When approved, the credit will be transferred to specified or unspecified units within the qualification and recorded as “AS-Advanced Standing”.
All applications for RPL must be submitted using the SIHE RPL Form available online at https://sydneyinstitute.edu.au/forms/
Applications must be received two weeks before the commencement date of each semester.
Applications received after this date will not be considered.
